The Blue Economy

The Blue Economy is about doing sustainability better. By implementing a zero-waste philosophy and innovative business models inspired by nature we can create jobs and stable economies that are 100% sustainable. It evolved out of research at United Nations University in the mid-1990s spearheaded by Gunter Pauli. Today, there are more than 180 cases where the Blue Economy has been implemented in practice. These self-sustaining projects range from the regeneration of 8 hectares of rainforest in the Colombian savannah to the transformation of waste rock into paper that can be recycled for thousands of years. They offer strong business models that generate jobs and strengthen local economies while being 100% sustainable.

The concept of the Blue Economy (100 innovations in the next 10 years to create 100 million jobs) was presented to the Club of Rome in 2010 by Prof Gunter Pauli. Here's a list of the 100 Blue Economy Innovations.

Case 1: The Vortex.
This natural phenomenon could one day replace chemicals and membranes, and upset the existing cash flows of traditional suppliers that have looked safe. The technology platform of the vortex is inspired by the observation that dirty water cleanses itself as a river moves downstream. The continuous swirling movement forces air in and out of the water, discouraging and stimulating beneficial micro-organisms.
